An overwhelmingly iconic piece that epitomizes the “Tiger Stripe” category.

This is a combat shirt featuring a pattern known among collectors as “John Wayne Dense (JWD)” or “Okinawa Tiger.” Sizes range from A to L, so they run on the larger side.

Among the many Tiger Stripe patterns from the Vietnam War era, this one is particularly well-known. It features a strikingly distinctive pattern—with very dark, nearly black stripes and fine brushstrokes of olive green and pale khaki—that is instantly recognizable as “Tiger.” It can truly be said to be the quintessential example of a vintage Tiger Stripe.

This particular shirt is an “Asian Cut” model, believed to have been made in Japan around 1965. The size “A-L” is still visible on the inside of the collar, which corresponds to an Asian Large. Many Asian Cut tiger-stripe shirts are small by modern standards, so finding a size that actually fits significantly narrows down your options. Given that, the “A-L” marking is a welcome feature. This is a relatively large shirt by JWD standards.

The details are superb as well, featuring two flap pockets on the front. With a simple yet practical design—the pocket flaps fastened by a button in the center—along with the large front buttons and the silhouette characteristic of the Asian Cut, you can fully appreciate the charm of a locally made Tiger shirt from that era.

Furthermore, the color retention on this piece is excellent.

While you can see the fading typical of a used item, the dark areas—which are the lifeblood of Tiger—haven’t completely faded away, and the dark stripes characteristic of JWD remain clearly visible. The contrast with the olive color is sharp, and it’s in exquisite condition, leaving room for the color to evolve further with repeated wear.

Looking at the reverse side, you can see how the print has penetrated the fabric and observe its unique texture, offering a different kind of charm from the printed fabric of that era compared to the front.

Tiger Stripe features a diverse range of locally produced items originating from South Vietnam, Okinawa, Japan, Taiwan, and other regions, forming a complex world distinct from standard U.S. military-issued camouflage uniforms. Among these, JWD is one of the quintessential patterns that no Tiger Stripe collector can afford to overlook.

It is by no means a pattern valued solely for its rarity.

Deep black, muted olive, and bold, flowing stripes. The color scheme and the pattern itself are simply cool.

Plus, this one is a relatively large size: A-L.

This JWD is highly recommended not only for those who wish to own it as a collector’s item but also for those who want to actually wear it as a vintage piece. It is a used item. While there is general wear and fading commensurate with its age, the color remains sufficiently vibrant, allowing you to fully enjoy the authentic vintage Tiger Stripe aesthetic. Please check the photos. A pattern representative of 1960s Tiger Stripe, and in Asian Large size.

Precisely because it’s a classic, this is a piece you’ll want to own. Don’t miss out.

Please note that returns are not accepted for used items. Thank you for your understanding.
